TENS machine hire
I’m stoked to say I have become an an affiliate with Babycare TENS! I always talk about pain relief options during my antenatal classes, with the TENS machine being one. I had one on stand-by for my second baby, however didn’t get the chance to use it as my labour was very quick! However, I did try it before labour to make sure I knew how to set up etc, so I have ‘technically’ tried it, just not in labour!
TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) is a method of pain relief involving the use of a mild electrical current. It is a small, battery-operated device that has leads connected to sticky pads called electrodes that you place directly on your skin on your lower back. TENS promotes the release of endorphins (the body’s own pain-relieving chemicals) while also creating a barrier in the brain to block the pain signals - clever huh!
⚡️How it works:
When the device is switched on, small electrical impulses are delivered to the affected area of your body, which you feel as a tingling sensation. The electrical impulses can reduce the pain signals going to the spinal cord and brain, which may help relieve pain and relax muscles.
There is limited evidence to say whether TENS is a reliable method of pain relief and clinical research trials are currently ongoing. Many women have said they found holding the device to control their level of pain relief took the 'edge off', and it was a great distraction during early labour.
There are no known adverse side effects of using a TENS machine, however you cannot use it in the water for obvious reasons!
